Her name is on the lips of millions; people admire her, argue about her, criticise her, but no-one remains indifferent. The reason is simple. Her victory at the 49th Eurovision Song Contest in Istanbul was as spectacular as it was unexpected. Ruslana soared to the music Olympus and her triumph will be remembered long afterwards. Last but not least, her triumph made the world remember both the singer that proved to be the only one of her kind and her country, Ukraine. Perhaps time will pass before we fully appreciate what this fragile expressive young lady has accomplished for all of us. Perhaps it was that long-awaited chance...

Trust Companies: Another Scandal?
A man-made disaster, known in Ukraine as trust companies, marks its tenth anniversary this year. In the summer of 1994, depositors started being gypped en masse by a new kind of business entities established under the Cabinet Decree “On Trust Companies”. Now one can only laugh recalling how smart Polytechnic Institute students Mykhailo Varnov and Valery Halahan were to set up Ukraine’s biggest Dunceville (formally known as the Fintrust Co.), which relieved respectable businessmen and battle-hardened pensioners of greenbacks, collecting them by offering 3,000% annual interest; or how people stood in endless and aggressive queues to invest in the firm Mercury (Ukrainian version of Russia’s ill-famed MMM). Mercury owner Semen Yufa later reportedly fled to Israel and then vanished into thin air. History shows that no lessons are learned from history. Whereas ten years ago Ukrainian citizens struggled to protect their hard-earned savings from inflation, today they dream of buying homes. Housing costs in Ukraine have increased considerably and can be ill-afforded by many. It was thus new kinds of trust companies sprang to life, but many could collapse already this autumn...

A Crowded Scene for the Presidential Campaign
Officially, the presidential candidates will start being registered in Ukraine on July 4, which also happens to be US Independence Day. This is just a strange and unrelated coincidence that has never previously occurred. Registration is later this time round. Nominations were to begin in May, but the Verkhovna Rada amended the presidential election law, among other things reducing the campaign timeframe, meaning that the presidential race will be launched at a later date. This delay, however, is not likely to lessen the attendant tensions. Even now it is safe to assume that there will be more than ten candidates, but less than twenty.

A New Division of Europe
On May 1st the European Union admitted ten more countries: the Greek part of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Even before this, official Kyiv had been counting the likely political, social, and economic cost. The political loss, in the sense that Ukraine was now actually further away from European integration instead of the recent prospects which seemed to be offering close association or even the chance of joining. Back in 1991, when voting on the underlying domestic and foreign political principles, the Verkhovna Rada determined that achieving a European living standard would be Ukraine’s strategic objective, although at the time no-one would have risked predicting full European membership. Over time, however, such membership had become an actual, albeit remote opportunity.

Three Times Brazil
During the last two years I have visited Brazil three times and still look forward to visiting again and again. My first trip was at the invitation and due to the generosity of the previous Brazilian Ambassador to Ukraine Mr. Helder Martins de Moraes. Helder was so proud of his country and tried really hard to persuade me to visit. He even offered complimentary use of his beautiful apartment located in the centre of Copacabana Beach. How could I refuse.To see the famous New year celebration and firework display from a luxury apartment on the Copacabana Beach was maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Cьогодні ім’я Руслани на вустах у мільйонів: нею захоплюються, про неї сперечаються, її славлять, її критикують. Байдужих немає. Бо перемога української співачки на 49-му конкурсі “Євробачення” у Стамбулі була настільки яскравою, настільки приголомшуючою, а сама Руслана так стрімко злетіла на музичний Олімп, що згадувати про її тріумф будуть ще довгі роки. Але світ довідався не тільки про самобутню, ні на кого не схожу виконавицю. Він уже запам’ятав, що є така країна - Україна. Можливо, ми й самі не до кінця усвідомлюємо, що для кожного з нас зробила ця тендітна, експресивна жінка. Можливо, це й був той самий довгоочікуваний шанс...

Трастові граблі: напередодні нового скандалу?
Катастрофа під назвою “траст” цього року святкує своє десятиліття. Саме влітку 1994 року комерційні структури, створені відповідно до Декрету Кабінету Мінстрів “Про довірчі товариства”, почали масово “кидати” вкладників. Зараз смішно пригадати, як студенти Політехничного інституту на зразок Мишка Варнова і Валери Галагана, які створили найпотужніший столичний “лохотрон” ДТ “Фінтраст”, збирали валюту під 3000% річних у респектабельних бізнесменів і навчених життям пенсіонерів. Чи як громадяни билися один з одним в черзі до віконечок, де приймали гроші співробітники фірми “Меркурій” (український різновид МММ). До речі, сліди власника “Меркурія” Семена Юфи загубились десь у далекому Ізраїлі. Втім історія вчить того, що нічого не вчить. Якщо 10 років тому громадяни намагалися вберегти свої заощадження від інфляційного знецінення, то зараз вони мріють придбати житло. Ціни на квартири в країні виросли в декілька разів і стали не по кишені навіть досить заможному українцеві. Ось тоді й з’явилися заманливі пропозиції від нових трастів, які можуть обвалитися вже восени...

Президентська масовка
4 липня, у День незалежності Америки, в Україні почнеться реєстрація кандидатів у президенти. Дивний збіг. Такого раніше не було. Все пояснюється просто: висування претендентів мало стартувати ще в травні, але парламент вніс зміни до закону про вибори глави держави. Зокрема, були скорочені терміни проведення електоральної кампанії. Тому президентський старт відбудеться з деяким запізненням. Але ця “затримка” не вплине на напруження майбутньої боротьби. Вже можна з певністю констатувати, що кандидатів буде більше 10, але менше 20.

Новий переділ Європи
Першого травня поріг Європейського Союзу переступили 10 держав-новачків: грецька частина Кіпру, Чехія, Естонія, Угорщина, Латвія, Литва, Мальта, Польща, Словаччина, Словенія. Та задовго до цього, отримавши “від воріт поворіт”, в Україні почали підраховувати свої можливі збитки. Політичні, соціальні, економічні. Передусім втрата політична - віддалення від Європи замість так бажаного ще недавно зближення, якщо не сказати - злиття. Ще 1991 року, ухвалюючи засади внутрішньої та зовнішньої політики, Верховна Рада визначила стратегічною метою України створення європейських стандартів життя. Хоча тоді ще не мріяли про стовідсоткове європейство, однак невдовзі такі надії плекати почали.

Тричі в Бразилії
За останні два роки я вже тричі побував у Бразилії. І не можу дочекатись, коли поїду ще раз, ще... Моя перша подорож відбулася на запрошення та завдяки щедрості попереднього посла Бразилії в Україні пана Хелдера Мартінса де Мораесa. Він дуже пишався своєю країною і докладав усіх зусиль, аби переконати мене відвідати її. Навіть запропонував зупинитися в його квартирі, що знаходиться в центрі району пляжу Копакабана. Хіба від такого відмовляються? Побачити яскраве святкування Нового року, феєрверк на пляжі - це може бути єдина нагода в житті.
